Backyard Composting

Turn your trash to treasure with home composting. Transform kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost that makes plants flourish. Learn to create compost at home, what materials can be composted, what containers are best, and how to prevent odors.

Join Rick Carr, senior farm director of Rodale Institute, as he shares the key elements of composting effectively in your backyard. Learn how to quickly identify and troubleshoot problems, and how to harvest and use the finished compost in your garden to improve plant growth. This is a great opportunity to discover how you can make a positive impact on the environment and create a valuable resource for your garden. Students will observe a demonstration of a home garden composting setup outside. This class is rain or shine. Dress for the weather. This program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Sunday, September 22, 2024. About the Instructor: From laboratory research to field applications, Rick Carr has been studying the science and utilization of compost, vermicompost, and liquid compost extracts. As Compost Production Specialist, Rick managed Rodale Institute’s large-scale composting facility and oversaw field applications of compost in several projects. His most recent project was examining manure and pasture management strategies that reduce swine parasites in pastured pork production. Rick is now the Senior Farm Director and manages all farming operations across Rodale Institute’s ten campuses.
