Newark Summer Camps Guide 2015

Art Camp I

Create new projects using different mediums and techniques each day. Two dimensional and three dimensional projects will be explored. Camp will be held on Mon- Fri Jun22 through 26 from 9am until 12pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $173 and the Resident Discount Fee is $150 Ages: 5-7 (5 year olds must have completed kindergarten)

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting in this week long camp. Classes will be held on Mon- Fri Jul 13 through 17 from 9am until 12pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $173 and the Resident Discount Fee is $150. Ages: 8-14

Pottery Camp

Ages 8-16       Carole Fox

Use earthenware clay and polymer clay in this week-long camp. Classes will be held on Mon- Fri Jul 13 through 17 from 12:30-2:30pm or 2:45-4:45pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $113 and the Resident Discount Fee is $94. Ages: 8-16

Broadway Musical Theater Camp

Ages 8-14                                                      

Do you like to sing and perform? Have a fun filled week learning show tunes, stage movement, and acting from a script and then perform a “Broadway” production at the end of the week. The camp will be held from 2-6pm, Monday-Friday,
June 22-26. Registration Fee is $87.  The Newark Resident Discount Fee is $69

Lights, Camera, Acting Movie Camp

Ages 9-15                                                      

Learn how to make a movie from acting to writing a script to directing to filming. Campers will create an original movie starring themselves which will be debuted at the George Wilson Center on Friday for family and friends. The camp will be held from 2-6pm, Monday-Friday, July 6-10. Registration Fee is $87.  The Newark Resident Discount Fee is $69

Curtain's Up! Theatre Camp

Ages 7-14                                                      

Learning how to act can be a truly creative experience as we explore acting basics through imaginative theatre games. What a fun way to develop confidence, poise, self-esteem, concentration, communication, and interaction with others. The camp will be held from 2-6pm, Monday-Friday, July 20-24. Registration Fee is $87.  The Newark Resident Discount Fee is $69

Eco/Safety

Eco Kids Camp

Eco Kids will spend a week exploring the environment and learning ways to help preserve the environment through hands on activities, educational sessions and recycled crafts. Camp will be held on Mon- Fri Jul 20 through 24 from 1 until 4pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $88 and the Resident Discount Fee is $70 Ages: 5-8 (5 year olds must have completed kindergarten)

Safe Kids Camp

Teaching kids how to be safe in an ever changing world. Strangers, fire safety, fun on wheels a and in the water, accidents and emergencies and more will be taught while having a great time during camp. Camp will be held on Mon- Fri Jul 27 through 31 from 9am until 4pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $138 and the Resident Discount Fee is $118 Ages: 5-8 (5 year olds must have completed kindergarten) 

Day Camp

Camp GWC

Newark Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking registration for Camp GWC, Newark’s most flexible day camp, held at the George Wilson Community Center.  This camp gives children a wide variety of activities to enjoy including games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming and exciting week-long themes.  A trip is planned each week to local areas of interest.  Activities will take place inside and out at the George Wilson Center and Park, located at 303 New London Road in Newark. 

The camp is for ages 6-13.  One week sessions are scheduled June 15– August 7. Cost is $126 per week.  The Newark Resident Fee is $106.  Camp hours are 8:30am-3:30pm with before (7:30-8:30am) and after (4-5:30pm) camp care available at an additional fee. Half day options are also available 8:30am-1pm or 12-3:30pm.

Intro to Animation Creations

For ages 7-9, August 3-7, 9am-11:45am, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $149. Dive into the world of video animation and coding with Scratch®, MIT’s innovative programming language created just for kids! 

Awesome Robotics by C.A.K.E. CO.!

For ages 8-11, August 3-7, 12:45-3:30pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $149. Being a member of the Creative Answers Kids Engineering Company, aka, C.A.K.E. Co. has never been better as campers take building and programming to the next level using the LEGO® WeDo Robotics software and two different WeDo Construction sets. 

Robot Rally I

For ages 6-8, August 10-14, 9am-11:45am, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $149. Young programmers will write their own programs to make virtual robots sing, dance, help tell stories and play music; and send BeeBot through courses and missions. 

STEM Adventures in Building & Programming

For ages 9-11, August 10-14, 12:45-3:30pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $149. This hands on exploration of engineering and coding combines building with Legos and programming with Scratch, created by MIT’s Media Lab

Sports/Outdoors

Horseback Riding Lessons at Sunset Stables

Ages 6-13                                          

Group riding lessons at Sunset Stables. Lessons taught Western style. Our horses are safe, reliable, and take good care of their riders. We choose only the best horses and pair them up with our guests according to riding ability. The lessons are scheduled on Mondays, July 6-27 from 6-7pm. Registration Fee is $147.  The Newark Resident Fee is $125

Pony Up at Sunset Stables

Ages 5-12                                          

Pony Up is geared to give young children an introduction to horseback riding and horsemanship. Children will be introduced to proper horse etiquette, grooming, how to lead a pony properly, putting the saddle on and riding all in a safe and FUN environment. Pony Up is scheduled Saturdays, June 20 or August 1 from 12-1pm. Registration Fee is $47.  The Newark Resident Fee is $32.

Family Night at Sunset Stables

All Ages

Have you ever been curious about what it takes to own your own horse? Horse care, horse anatomy and horse housekeeping will be discussed during your one hour tour at Sunset Stables.  Learn about the services Sunset Stables offers.  The Family Fun Night is scheduled for Monday, June 8 from 6-7pm.  Registration Fee is $24.  The Newark Resident Fee is $14.    

Youth Summer Sports Camps

Newark Parks and Recreation will be offering several weekly youth sports camps during the summer months including archery, golf, soccer, basketball, tennis and volleyball. Contact the Recreation Office at 366-7000 for specific dates and times.

Children/Family Yoga

This class will be an interactive and fun introduction to yoga for kids!  A combination of games, music, and basic yoga poses will allow your child to have fun while gaining the benefits of a yoga practice.  A yoga mat or towel is helpful, but not required. Parents are welcome to join and stay with their little one, or let them “exercise” their independence! Class will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:15pm starting Jun 24-Jul 22 at the George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $37 and the resident discount fee $25.

Rittenhouse Explorers Camp

Rittenhouse Explorers is a NEW half day nature-oriented camp located at Rittenhouse Park. Activities include nature appreciation, archery, camping skills, canoeing, craft projects, hiking, songs and much more. Children must be age 5 and completed Kindergarten by the first day of camp. Camp hours are 9am-12pm, Monday-Friday. Session I will run June 15-June 26, Session II will run June 29-July 10, Session III will run July 13-July 24 and Session IV will run July 27-August 7. Fees for all sessions are $140 and the Newark resident discount fees are $120.

Rittenhouse Rocks

Rittenhouse Rocks is an extension of the popular day camp, conducted at Rittenhouse Park for ages 7-12. This camp will include field trips and a continuation of favorite activities from Rittenhouse Camp including archery, canoeing and campfire cooking. Each child is to bring their own lunch. A beverage is available each day. More information will be available March 2015.    

Basketball Camp

For ages 6-15, June 15-18 and Aug 3-6, 8am-2:30pm, Mon-Thu, Newark High School. Fee is $125 and the Newark resident discount fee is $110.

Tennis Camp

For ages 6-12, June 22-26 and July 27-31, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, Handloff Park. Fee is $97 and the Newark resident discount fee is $79.

Disc Golf Camp

Ages 8-14, June 22-25, 1-4pm, Mon-Thu, White Clay Creek State Park. Fee is $127 and the Newark resident discount fee is $110.

Delaware Soccer Tots Camp

For ages 3-6, July 6-9 and July 20-23, 9-11:30am, Mon-Thu, Downes Elementary School.  Fee is $99 and the Newark resident discount fee is $89.

Delaware Soccer Day Camp

For ages 7-12, July 6-9 and July 20-23, 9-1pm, Mon-Thu, Downes Elementary School.  Fee is $163 and the Newark resident discount fee is $150.

Junior Golf Camp

Ages 7-17, Jul 13-17, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club. Fee is $287 and the Newark resident discount fee is $258.

Skateboarding Summer Camp

Ages 5-12, Jul 13-17, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, Handloff Park Skate Spot.  Fee is $170 and the Newark resident discount fee is $150.

Total Play Multi- Sports Camp

Ages 5-11, July 20-24, 9am-4pm full day, 9am-12:30 half day morning, 1-4pm half day afternoon, Fairfield Park. Full day fee is $255 and Newark resident discount fee $236, morning half day fee is $220 and Newark resident discount fee is $199, afternoon half day fee is $168 and Newark resident discount fee is $149.

First Play Lacrosse Camp

Ages 6-14, Jul 20-24, 6-7:30pm, Mon-Fri, Fairfield Park. Fee is $220 and the Newark resident discount fee is $199.

Sports Squirts Camp

Ages 3-5, July 20-24, 4:30-5:30pm, Mon-Fri, Fairfield Park. Fee is $115 and the Newark resident discount fee is $99.

Volleyball Camp 

Grades 5-9, July 27-31, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, Newark Charter. Fee is $176 and the Newark resident discount fee is $156.

Archery Camp

Ages 8-12, Aug 10-14, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, New Castle 100 Archers Club. Fee is $156 and the Newark resident discount is $137.

Experience Delaware's Premier Sports Camp by the US Sports Institute

The US Sports Institute (USSI) offers quality camps and clinics to children of all ages and abilities.  This summer, experience over 15 sports in one week through Newark Parks and Recreation   Our famous Multi Sports Camps provide campers, ages 5-11 years, with a fun-packed time in an enjoyable environment where they can develop a wider range of sporting skills, while developing teamwork and interpersonal skills at the same time! This camp will be held Jul 20-24 from 9am-4pm with half day options available.  We also are offering multi-sport camps for ages 3-5 years with Total Sports Squirts being held July 20-24 from 4:30-5:30pm! Participants have the opportunity to try Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball, T-Ball, Floor Hockey, Flag Football, Parachute games and more in a safe, structured environment.

We will also be offering Lacrosse Camp for ages 6-14 years from 6-7:30 pm, July 20-24! Participants will have great fun learning this exhilarating, fast paced game. All participants will learn the fundamentals of the sport including, stick handling, passing, scooping, dodging and shooting as well as many other key techniques. Ideal for beginners (no experience required) or intermediate players. Equipment can be provided. USSI will provide your child with a lasting memory of sporting fun!    

Swimming Lessons

Newark Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking registration for its Swimming Classes for ages 3 and up. Weeklong morning sessions (Monday – Friday) will be offered July 13-17 (session 1) and July 20-24 (Session 2).  Evening classes are offered the week of July 27-31 (session 3) at the George Wilson Pool, located at 303 New London Road.

Four levels are offered:

Beginner Swim meets 9:50-10:20am for sessions 1 and 2 and 5:15-5:45pm for session 3.

Advanced Beginner Swim meets 10:25-10:55am for sessions 1 and 2 and 5:50-6:20pm for session 3

Intermediate Swim meets 11-11:30am for sessions 1 and 2 and 6:25-5:55pm for session 3

Advanced Swim meets 11:35am-12:05pm for sessions 1 and 2

Parent/Tot swimming (ages 1-3) will be offered July 20-24 from 9:15-9:45am.

Adult Swimming lessons (ages 16 and over) will be offered July 27-31 from 7-7:30pm 

Registration Fee is $57.  The Newark Resident Discounted Fee is $44.    

Before/After School

Before and After School Programs

The City of Newark Department of Parks and Recreation offers a Before School and After School program at John R. Downes Elementary School and West Park Elementary School.  The program is for children grades K-5 enrolled at Downes or West Park Schools only and meets when school is in session. Registration for the 2015-2016 has started!

The Before School center meets Monday-Friday, Aug 31-Jun 15 from 7-8:15am in the cafeteria at both locations.  The fee per month is $148 and the Newark resident discount fee is $138 per month.

The After School center meets Monday-Friday, Aug 31-June 15 from 3-6pm in the cafeteria at both locations.  The fee per month is $169 and the Newark Resident discount fee is $159 per month.

Footworks Dance Camp

For ages 6-10, July 13-17, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $97 and the resident discount fee is $79.

Dangerous Camp for Boys

For ages 7-12, August 10-14, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $97 and the resident discount fee is $79. In this age of video games and cell phones, there must still be a place for knots, tree houses and stories of incredible courage.  This camp will encourage boys to recapture the adventure of Sunday afternoons and long summer days.  We’ll cover a wide range of topics with a boyish sense of curiosity.

Daring Camp for Girls

For ages 7-12, Aug 10-14, 1-4pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $97 and the resident discount fee is $79. Whether you’re a girly-girl, an athlete, a brainiac, or a little bit of everything, this camp gets you ready for anything.  Join us for enthusiastic, unfettered adventure, where we’ll cheer girls on to live out the Daring Girls credo:  Enjoy yourself. Learn new things. Lead an Interesting Life. 

Jedi Training Camp

For ages 7-12, July 20-24, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $97 and the resident discount fee is $79. Do you have what it takes to be a Jedi knight? Learn all about Jedis during this exciting week.

Horse Camp

For ages 6-13, June 22-26 or July 27-31, 9am-3pm, Mon-Fri, Sunset Stables.  Fee is $333 and the resident discount fee is $299. Half day option also available. A true horse camp at Sunset Stables, Delaware’s only trail riding facility located next to Lums Pond State Park. Horsemanship and riding will be taught. The emphasis on FUN includes horse safety, ground lessons, grooming, riding instruction, horse bathing, crafts, horse related games, horse care/barn chores, horse anatomy and scavenger hunts

Bricks 4 Kidz: Mining and Crafting

For ages 6-12, June 29-July 3, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $150. Experience the world of Minecraft with LEGO® bricks in this fun summer camp!  

Bricks 4 Kidz: Ninjago Games Galore

For ages 6-12, June 29-July 3, 1-4pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $150. Come play with all the new LEGO® Board Games & Ninjago characters. We will be tapping into our imagination and discovering our creativity as we attempt to create anything related to
games out of LEGO® Bricks.

Bricks 4 Kidz: model Designers 101

For ages 6-12, July 13-17, 1-4pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $170 and the resident discount fee is $150. This camp will explore the creative process of model design. Campers will learn the function of different LEGO® components and discover how those components can work together to create all kinds of solid structures and moving parts.

Science

Mad Science Spy Academy

For ages 7-12, June 15-19, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $157 and the resident discount fee is $138. Become a super spy and learn clever ways of performing tasks as we take a hands-on view of the science that spies use.

Mad Science Space the Final Frontier 

For ages 7-12, June 22-26, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $157 and the resident discount fee is $138. Brave young astronauts will explore the mysteries of space.

Mad Science Junior Doctors 

For ages 7-12, June 29-July 3, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $157 and the resident discount fee is $138. Go inside Cell City.  Learn the components of your cell and their function in the cell.

Mad Science Mad Robots and Widgets

For ages 7-12, July 6-10, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $187 and the resident discount fee is $168. Join us for a week of fun with robots. Learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time playing with super-cool mad robots that could have a mind of their own. This camp includes a $30 supply fee for your take-home robot.

Mad Science Radical Reactions and Detective Science

For ages 7-12, July 20-24, 9am-12pm, Mon-Fri, George Wilson Center.  Fee is $157 and the resident discount fee is $138. Campers will have tons of fun mixing up potions and experimenting with all kinds of chemical reactions!
