The following activities, classes and events are still open this spring, courtesy of Newark Parks and Recreation Department.

Art

Drawing and Painting

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting in this four week beginner’s class. Classes will be held on Sat May 2 through 23 from 10am until 12pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $93 and the Resident Discount Fee is $75. Ages 6-9.

Take Better Pictures in 6 weeks

Beginner to intermediate photographers who wants to take better pictures, but don’t want to get hung up on a bunch of

technical stuff …  this course is for you! Classes will be held on Wed May 6 through Jun 10 from 6:30 until 9:30pm at George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $93 and the Resident Discount Fee is $75 

Adult Pottery

Hand building with clay and working on the potter's wheel will be taught. Students can then explore their area of interest.  Returning students may continue at their own pace.

Ages 16 and over

Sports

ADVANCED ARCHERY

This class will cover advanced fundamentals of archery and build from first class. The archer will review skills and get additional practice to improve their skills. "Bare-bow" equipment will be used. All equipment is provided for you, please do not bring your own. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 5:30-7pm at the New Castle 100 Archers Club beginning May 14-Jun 4. Fee is $55 and the Newark residnet discount fee is $39.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPOUND BOW

This class will cover the use of a "Genesis" compound bow. The barebow style of archery will be used. All equipment will be provided, please do not bring your own. Classes will be held on Thursdays, May 14-Jun 4 from 7:15-8::45pm at the New Castle 100 Archers Club. Registration fee is $60 and the Newark resident discount fee is $44.

ADULT SUMMER VOLLEYBALL LEAGUES

The City of Newark sponsors an outdoor co-rec volleyball league from early May through mid-August. When registering, please specify the division in which you wish to play: Monday A, Monday BB, Tuesday B, Wednesday B. Last year’s teams will be given priority placement. New teams are accepted on a first-come first-served basis, as space allows. We will begin accepting entry requests from new teams on

GET FIT, HAVE FUN & LEARN TO RUN

This run/walk exercise program will focus on training to get in shape and safely develop the strength and endurance needed to complete a 5K (3.1 mile) race. The group format will provide guidance, camaraderie and encouragement, both from an experienced trainer coaching the program as well as others who have also made the life-changing decision to get up and get moving. Participants will be challenged to train at a pace appropriate to their fitness level, whether the goal is to run, run/walk or walk the 5K distance or simply to improve health and lose weight through increased mobility. Group will meet each week on Monday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm at the Newark Reservoir beginning Apr 6-Jun 1.  Registration is $78 and the Newark resident discount fee is $65.

Tennis Lessons

Spring is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the weather, and what better way than to learn how to play tennis.  Newark Parks & Recreation is currently taking registration for a variety of Tennis programs for ages 5 through adult.  Classes are held on Sunday afternoons or weekday evenings, depending on your level of play, for six 1 ½ hour lessons, at various parks in the Newark area.  Beginner through Advanced levels are offered.  Registration Fee is $73.  The Newark Resident Discounted Fee is $56. 

Youth lessons including USTA Ten and Under Tennis are offered for youth ages 5-10.  Classes are held Saturday mornings or Tuesday evenings.  Registration Fee is $60.  The Newark Resident Discounted Fee is $44. 

Additional offerings include Parent/Child Tennis, Cardio Tennis, Afterschool Tennis, Homeschool Tennis and more! 

Tennis with the Mayor

Newark Parks & Recreation is pleased to offer a FREE tennis program with Mayor Polly Sierar. Kids can sign up for a free lesson and adults can test their mettle and compete against Newark’s top elected official between the lines. This is a fun, informal way to get to know Polly and also get a workout participating in her favorite sport. Sessions will rotate throughout Newark’s voting districts one Sunday each month through October. Youth classes meet 5-6:30pm and Adults 6:30-8pm.

Yoga

EVENING YOGA

The ancient practice of yoga is a combination of exercises, breathing and meditation techniques.  It has long been an effective way of relieving emotional stress, stretching and toning the body and connecting with yourself.  It energizes and refreshes, improves circulation and promotes mental clarity and concentration.  Participants should wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.  Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 7-8pm at Downes Elementary School beginning Apr 1-Jun 3.  Fee is $81 and the Newark resident discount fee is $64.

FRIDAY MORNING YOGA* -

In this class, Yoga breathing and stretching is taught to help us function at our best, physicallly and mentally.   Mental alertness is actually closely linked to the balance of energy in the body so that your strength, flexibilty and balance improve the way you think and vice-versa! We will work on different postures and areas of the body with every class.  The practice of yoga is calming and cleansing and will act to restore agility and vitality.  There will be special attention paid to help the individual student with their particular issues.  All levels of age and fitness are welcome to join us.  Please inform the instructor on the first day of class if you wish to do “Chair Yoga”. Classes are held on Friday mornings from 9-10:30am at the George Wilson Center beginning Apr 10-Jun 5. Fee is $90 and the Newark resident discount fee is $75.

MULTI-LEVEL YOGA - THURSDAYS

For anyone interested in yoga, this class will focus on breath through a flow of standing and seated poses.  We will explore different styles and numerous adjustments and options for each pose will be given, making this class adaptable for any level of experience.  Props are welcome but not required.  Classes are held on Thursday evenings from 5:15-6:30pm beginning Apr 9-Jun 11 at the George Wilson Center. Registration fee is $84 and the Newark resident discount fee is $70.

GENTLE EVOLVING YOGA

For those who want to get their blood flowing with gentle ease, gentle evolving level is the class in between gentle and multi-level. We will be using blankets and props to aid in poses, moving through a gentle flow of standing and seated poses at a controlled pace. This class is for all ages, but a great introduction to yoga if you have never practiced before! Classes are Wednesday mornings from 9-10:15am  at the George Wilson Center starting Apr 8-Jun 10. Registration fee is $84 and the Newark resident discount fee is $70.
